Women's Euro 2022

On Wednesday 13th July and Sunday 17th July, KS2 pupils had the chance to attend Sweden v Switzerland and Switzerland v Netherlands group C games in the Women's European Championships. The children had a fantastic time, some of whom who were getting the their first taste of live football. They were a pleasure to take and represented our school wonderfully.

Monday 20th June

Congratulations to our Year 3 and 4 pupils for achieving 2nd place at the Sheffield Links football final!

Year 3 and 4 Mixed Football

Well done to our Year 3 and 4 pupils who took part in the football competition at Bradfield on Monday 13th June. As we were one of only two teams attending, and with the top two teams qualifying for the LINKS city finals, we have qualified for the next round. The children also got a chance to be the first to wear our new sports kit.

Sheffield Y5 Girls Activator Training

On Monday 23rd May, 5 of our Y5 and Y4 girls attended the EIS for some training to develop football skills and to promote football in school, especially for girls. Mrs Benson accompanied the girls and was proud of how enthusiastic and involved the girls were. We're looking forward to seeing them lead and train groups at school.

NFL Flag Football

Congratulations to The Dungworth Foxes Flag Football Team. We competed today (20.5.22) at Concord in the Sheffield regional tournament. We won 1 of the 4 games we played but were very competitive in all games, only marginally losing to the eventual tournament winners. Some standout moments included Alfie's interception, Freddie's running touchdowns, Alfie's passing touchdown to Joshua and Matilda's consistently incredible tackling. Well done! Looking forward to next year already.

Penguin Colony Initiative

At the end of last month, children were informed about the Penguin Colony Initiative started by Sheffield City Trust. The initiative involved 50 schools taking on the challenge of redesigning one of the penguins from iceSheffield that are used to help children (and sometimes adults too) learn how to ice skate.

Well done to all the children who put forward a design; there were so many incredible entries. The winning entry, which was chosen by Miss Dewsnap and Mrs Adams, was by Alex in Year 1. Below is a picture of his Fantastic Mr Fox design in its finished form. Be sure to look out for it when you next go ice skating.

Thank you to everyone involved.

Update to School Procedures following lifting of Covid 19 Restrictions

Covid symptoms

We have received the following guidance from the DfE with regard to staff and pupils now that Covid testing is no longer readily available.

  • adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and they no longer have a high temperature
  • children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can go back to school, college or childcare when they no longer have a high temperature, and they are well enough to attend
  • adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice will be 3 days

The Government believes that the population now has much stronger protection against COVID-19 than at any other point in the pandemic. This means we can begin to manage the virus like other respiratory infections, thanks to the success of the vaccination programme and access to antivirals, alongside natural immunity and increased scientific and public understanding about how to manage risk.

The updated list of possible Covid symptoms is as follows:

  • fever
  • new continuous cough
  • loss of sense of smell or taste
  • shortness of breath
  • feeling tired or exhausted
  • aching body
  • headache
  • sore throat
  • blocked or runny nose
  • loss of appetite
  • diarrhoea
  • feeling sick or being sick

Beginning of the School Day

  • The school gate will open at 8.40am. Children will go straight to class and begin to access learning activities immediately. The gate will close at 8.50 am. Registers will be completed by class teachers at 8.51am. If your child arrives after 8.50am, they should go to the main entrance where they will be admitted by the office staff who will record the number of minutes they are late. They will be marked late in the register. Punctuality is an important life skill and whilst we recognise that the weather and traffic may have an impact, it is vital to get your child into school on time so they can have a settled start to their day and so that no learning time is lost.
  • Children will continue to wash their hands regularly throughout the school day.

School Uniform

  • Children will need to wear red, jade or white polo shirts and red or jade jumpers/cardigans together with black or dark grey trousers, skirts or pinafores OR red or green check dresses.
  • All Black trainers/ sturdy black shoes are required for footwear as the children will have daily active sessions e.g Monday running a mile, Tuesday mindfulness Yoga etc.
  • We will not require children to get changed for PE. Please send your child dressed in their school PE kit on their PE days. PE kit consists of dark grey or black leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a school T shirt. School PE hoodies are really useful for the colder weather.

Lunchtimes and Playtimes

  • We will continue to have separate KS1 and KS2 playtimes in school however we will return to a single combined lunchtime. Lunchtime will run from 12.00pm to 1.00pm. Y5/6 pupils will act as sports leaders from September and will provide sports and games activities for the younger children.

End of the School Day

  • The school end to the day will be slightly altered

3.25 pm Key Stage One and Reception children

3.30 pm Key Stage Two children

This will enable pupils to continue to be dismissed from the school doors to ensure their safety.Pick Up

Other Information

  • If your child’s inhaler or other medication is not currently in school, please bring it in on the first day and hand it to their teacher
  • Please make sure they have a suitable coat every day as we continue to go outside for breaks and lunchtimes and as many lessons as possible.
  • We will continue to have all the windows open - make sure you send your child with a jumper or cardigan. Please make sure they have their name in all items of clothing.
  • If the weather is going to be hot, please apply suncream at home. Pupils can wear a sunhat if required.
  • Your child may bring in hand sanitiser for personal use if they wish and this can be stored on their desk

Health and Safety

  • Children will continue to wash hands regularly – for 20 seconds using warm water and soap.
  • Staff will promote the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach – used tissues will be placed in a lidded bin.
  • All frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, tables and toys will be cleaned regularly. All areas will be thoroughly cleaned at the end of each day.

What happens if there is an outbreak

If there is a Covid outbreak in school (defined by 5 children or staff testing positive for COVID 19 or 10% of the school which ever is reached first), it could be that individual classes or the school needs to revert to the more stringent arrangements. You will be informed of this via text and email.

Spelling Bee Final March 2022

Congratulations to all the finalists who learnt another 100 words, many of which adults find tricky. They battled it out in front of the rest of KS2 with Amelis and Ariadne emerging as Y5/6 and Y3/4 winners.

The Lost Words

Last weekend we had the HUGE honour of being one of the first schools to be presented with a crowd-funded copy of The Lost Words, a book by the author Robert MacFarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris.

The book - a spell book of acrostic poems - was written in response to the news that the Oxford English Junior Dictionary would be removing many words to include more recent additions to our language, such as 'broadband'.  All of the words that were removed were linked to nature; words such as conker, bramble, otter and magpie.  One school worker in Scotland was so dismayed that she decided to raise funds to order a copy of the book for every school in Scotland.  Other parts of the country followed suit with 'Vernon Oak' as our benefactor for Sheffield.

The Sheffield Tree Festival was a celebration of the natural world, raising awareness for the plight of trees in Sheffield and beyond, and showcasing a poem written by Robert MacFarlane especially for Sheffield - Heartwood. Look out for the poem on posters across the city!

We received the first copy of the crowdfunded book on behalf of the West of the city. Miss Cooper accompanied Mrs Higgins and we were delighted to meet the author himself, our Lord Mayor Magid Magid, as well as join in with the many activities.
